This is a decade-long campaign reaching its zenith moment. Our goal is to protect 1.4 million acres of federal land between Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks; it's a landscape that is both beautiful and biodiverse, and it is in the center of the longest interconnected wilderness in the lower 48 states. This is an ideal place to create an integrated migratory corridor for wildlife and a wonderful place for people to recreate.
Read our executive summary to learn more about the long term plan for the health and wellness of mountain communities in the Sierra Nevada. Also, read the in-depth economic report on the proposal. The proposed monument would support 2,839 jobs and generate $287 million in annual local economic activity.
Recently, 52 California state legislators endorsed the proposal and more than 144 organizations signed a support letter. This is in addition to the 157 businesses and organizations already in support. The California Democratic Party and the DNC both adopted resolutions, making it a policy priority. Plus, 200 scientists signed on to a well-articulated letter expressing the scientific basis for its creation. The Sierra Club adopted a resolution in 2019 and put it on its monument wish list in 2021, Audubon created the Lowell Young Southern Sierra Nevada Important Bird Area in 2021, and the Center for Biological Diversity created a beautiful series of maps to support the monument in 2022. Also, in 2022, the United Church of Christ, which runs a summer camp in the region, adopted a Resolution. The Coalition to Protect America's Parks sent a letter to President Biden asking for the creation of the Range of Light with 300 members of the organization signing on - these are former park rangers and superintendents.
In 2022, Representative Jackie Speier introduced a bill with 11 cosponsors, laying the legislative groundwork for a Presidential Proclamation. The North Fork Mono tribe signed and wrote a support letter in 2023, and the environmental justice community in the nearby Central Valley wrote a letter soon after.
The list goes on.
